August News

We are quickly moving through the month of August and what a relief it is to rid ourselves of the heat and humidity.
As you can see by the health of the playing surfaces they also are glad to return to a more normal weather pattern. Midwestern
cool season grasses struggle when exposed to excessive heat and water saturated soil.

Bellwood Oaks 2 Person Best Ball Tournament

The return of the Bellwood Oaks Tournament brought a change to the golf routine for many players. Those that played all had an enjoyable time. Most asking if we could add a spring date for the 2012 season. I'm sure each team left strokes on the course but the scores were still impressive.
1st place   Brian and Ben Olson                     71 Gross
2nd place  Tim Gegen and Scott Sandberg     75 Gross
3rd place   Cory Meier and Jerry Reinhart       76 Gross
We look forward to our next tournament and welcome any suggestions you may have for us. With added participation we could add flights to better accommodate all abilities. Keep us on your golf calendar for next year.

Member "Good Better Best" game nearing the conclusion.

September 5th will mark the end to the "Good Better Best" game for members. Get out and play so no pars, birdies and eagles are left on the course. Wow! We have some fantastic scores to share.

Fall aerating

With the unusual and extreme weather conditions we have endured actually since last November all turf is in need of some TLC. One of the most beneficial practices, if not the most, for turf care is aerification. Benefits far surpass the short term inconveniences we put up with. In this day and age their are many different forms of aerating. All having advantages and disadvantages depending on the condition of the turf, soil and root mass. The stand by method is core removal and it would be arguable that it is the overall best method for improving turf health. This fall we are going to core greens, tees, and fairways.

Tees are going to be first on our schedule Aug 29th and 30th. The procedure will be to aerate, drag the dried cores to separate the soil and thatch, clean all thatch off and finally irrigate. This process has a minimal impact on a players ability to tee off.

Greens are scheduled, as always, for the Tuesday and Wednesday after Labor Day, Sept 6th and 7th. The procedure will be to aerate nine holes at a time so nine will always be open. We aerate, pick all the cores, top dress with a sand based topdressing, drag and broom all the top dress into the aerification holes and ball marks and finally irrigate. This season we are going to use a smaller tine to speed the healing process. If needed, we also come back in a few days with a light topdressing to make the surfaces even smoother. We want to have to have putting back to normal in 14 days or less.

Fairways are scheduled between Sept 1st and the 23rd. The procedure will be the same as the tees but the large size of a fairway limits us to 1-3 fairways a day. Soil conditions need to be moist for the tine to penetrate to full depth and the turf must be dry so we can drag the cores to separate the soil and thatch. As you would guess rain is welcome over night and frowned upon during the day. Players should also be reminded that during the aerating process a fairway would be considered ground under repair. Remove your ball from the cored area or remove the cores from around your ball without penalty.

Remember you can always call the clubhouse to get updates as we work our way through the aerating schedule. We do our best to keep the your inconveniences to a minimum.
